How to publish data

Step 1: Register with IATI

How you register with IATI depends on the publishing tool or method you want to use.

In most cases, for small to medium-sized organisations, using the free IATI Publisher tool is the easiest way to both register with IATI and publish data.

For organisations with larger volumes of data, such as donor governments or UN agencies, you will need to register on the IATI Registry.

Step 2: Prepare your data

If you are using IATI Publisher, you will enter information about your organisation and activities in the interface. You can save this data to come back to and publish from the tool when ready.

There are other publishing tools available to convert data into the XML file format required for IATI, along with the option to create a bespoke publishing system using your own internal systems. You are free to use whichever method suits your organisation best. More information can be found in Creating files.

Before publishing your data, you should check that its format complies with the IATI Standard. IATI Publisher, and similar publishing tools, have in-built checks for this. You can use d-preview to visualise your data and the IATI Validator to check its format if you are working with your own XML files.

Step 3: Publish your data

IATI Publisher will create and publish IATI data files for you, based on the information you have entered in the interface.

If you are creating your own IATI data files, store them in an accessible online location so that you can link them directly to the IATI Registry. The IATI Registry contains links to your data files and describes their content, meaning that it does not hold the data itself. For more guidance, see How to publish your data on the IATI Registry.
